With just 87 square kilometers, this small yet captivating island manages to pack in a diverse range of experiences, from gourmet dining to thrilling watersports, from serene hikes to lively festivals. This guide will take you through all the aspects that make Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten a must-visit destination.
A Tale of Two Nations
Saint-Martin and Sint Maarten are unique in that they are the smallest landmass in the world divided between two nations. The French side, Saint-Martin, is an overseas collectivity of France, while the Dutch side, Sint Maarten, is a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. This duality gives the island a distinctive character, with a blend of European sophistication and Caribbean laid-back charm.
Saint-Martin (French Side): Saint-Martin covers about 53 square kilometers and is known for its refined ambiance. The official language is French, and the Euro is the currency, though English and the U.S. dollar are widely accepted. The French side is renowned for its culinary excellence, with Grand Case often referred to as the «Gourmet Capital of the Caribbean.» The architecture here is more subdued, with quaint villages, elegant villas, and a relaxed atmosphere that invites visitors to slow down and savor the moment.
Sint Maarten (Dutch Side): Sint Maarten, covering 34 square kilometers, is more cosmopolitan and lively, with a bustling nightlife, duty-free shopping, and vibrant casinos. The official languages are Dutch and English, and the currency is the Netherlands Antillean guilder, though the U.S. dollar is commonly used. Sint Maarten’s capital, Philipsburg, is a hub of activity, especially along Front Street, where visitors can indulge in shopping for everything from jewelry to electronics, all tax-free.
This division, however, did not lead to conflict but rather to a peaceful coexistence that has lasted for centuries. The two sides have developed their own distinct identities, yet they share a common island culture that is warm, welcoming, and diverse. This cultural blend is evident in the island’s festivals, cuisine, and everyday life.
